What is Colorwork Studio?

Colorwork Studio is a knitter-friendly design tool to choose colors and visualize designs with the beauty of real yarns, including dyed-in-the-wool heathers, marls, and solids.

Instead of flat color blocks, swatches are rendered from high-quality, color-calibrated photographs of real yarn, so you can see how your colors will look together before casting on.

You can design and preview stranded colorwork (such as Fair Isle, Selbu, lopapeysa, and Latvian styles), intarsia, stripes, double knitting, and duplicate stitch.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

You can open the studio and start designing for free, without creating an account. To save your designs, you'll need to create a free account with a verified email address.

How accurately are yarn colors represented?

We photograph every yarn under consistent, professional studio lighting designed to approximate direct sunlight. This provides a reliable reference and preserves the differences between yarns more accurately than variable indoor or overcast lighting. When comparing the digital swatches with yarn you already own, view the physical yarn outside in direct sunlight for the closest comparison.

The exact appearance may vary somewhat between screens, since every display renders color differently. We prepare our images using a color-calibrated monitor, and a calibrated display will provide the most accurate results, but calibration is not required to use Colorwork Studio effectively.

For colorwork, how colors relate to one another is important: their contrast, similarity, brightness, and overall harmony. Because every yarn is photographed under the same conditions, those relationships remain useful even when a computer display shifts the colors slightly.

Do you use generative AI to render yarns?

No. We photograph yarn lines by hand, and render them into knit swatches using traditional computer graphics.

What devices and browsers are supported?

For the best experience, we recommend a desktop computer running the Chrome browser. Other modern browsers generally work, but desktop Chrome supports all the features.

Mobile devices can currently only view rendered swatches, but not edit.

Can I use it with patterns I sell?

Yes, you can link to a Colorwork Studio design in your paid patterns. We recommend using Unlisted designs on the Designer tier, so only knitters who have the link from your paid pattern will be able to view your chart.

Can I still see my designs after I cancel?

Yes, you will be able to view your designs to knit from them. However, you will not be able to save any further edits to the yarn colors or charts on the free tier.

The yarn I use isn't in the tool. Can it be added?

We're growing the yarn library. Email us with yarns you would like to knit colorwork with at team@colorwork.studio. It helps if you tell us why you like that yarn.

Note that some of the yarns in the lines we have listed are on backorder, so expect to see those added soon.
