Using chart edit tools

These tools modify a Selection. A Selection is a rectangle of stitches that you draw in the chart. To see a complete list of keyboard commands, read the Keyboard shortcuts page.

Selecting stitches

To create a selection, click the Select mode icon in the Chart tab. Then, choose one of these methods:

After you create a selection, you can modify it with your mouse:

You can find more editing tools in the Selection actions menu. To open this menu, use one of these methods:

The Selection actions menu.

Copying and pasting selections

  1. Select the stitches that you want to copy.
  2. Click Copy. A Paste Preview will appear over the selection. This preview has a dashed border.
  3. Move the Paste Preview to a new location. You can drag it with your mouse, or click the stitch where the top-left corner should go.
  4. Click the Apply paste icon.

The Paste Preview remains active after you paste. This allows you to move it and paste the stitches again. To cancel the paste action, click the Cancel paste icon.

If your copied block contains empty stitches, these spaces paste as transparent areas. The original stitches under the empty spaces will remain visible.

While the Paste Preview is active, you can use the flip, rotate, shift, and find and replace tools. These tools will modify the copied stitches in the preview, not the main chart.

Flipping selections

Flip horizontal: Mirrors the selection from left to right. Flip vertical: Mirrors the selection from top to bottom.

Rotating selections

Rotate 90: Rotates the selection one quarter-turn clockwise. Rotate 270: Rotates the selection one quarter-turn counterclockwise.

Note: Rotate 90 and Rotate 270 require a square selection because the stitches rotate in place. However, you can rotate a Paste Preview of any shape.

Rotate 180: Rotates the selection a half-turn. This tool works on selections of any shape.

Shifting and wrapping selections

The Shift and wrap tool moves every stitch in the selection by a specific number of stitches. If stitches move past one edge of the selection, they will reappear at the opposite edge.

  1. Click Shift and wrap.
  2. Type the number of stitches that you want to move.
  3. Select a Direction: Left, Right, Up, or Down.
  4. Click Apply.

You will see a live preview of the result in your chart while the menu is open.

Shift and wrap.

Finding and replacing symbols in a selection

The Find and replace tool changes one yarn symbol to a different yarn symbol inside the selection. Use this tool when you only want to change yarns in a specific area. (To change yarns in the entire chart, drag and drop the yarns in the main yarns panel instead).

  1. Click Find and replace.
  2. In the From column, type the symbol of the yarn that you want to replace.
  3. In the To column, type the symbol of the new yarn.
  4. To replace multiple symbols at the same time, enter each pair of symbols on a new row.
  5. Click Apply.

The tool processes all rows at the same time. This means you can swap two yarns directly (for example, change yarn 1 to yarn 2, and change yarn 2 to yarn 1 at the same time). You will see a live preview of the result in your chart while the menu is open.

  2. Click the chevron icon, or right-click the number. The Insert/Delete menu will open.
  3. To insert new rows or stitches, type a number in the How many field, and then click Insert.
